Landmark 51, "The Plague Stone" at near Ackworth, South Yorkshire.
Dating from an outbreak of Bubonic Plague in 1645 which claimed the lives of 153 villagers. People from neighbouring villages brought food and medicine to this point. Once they had withdrawn, Ackworth residents would collect the goods, leaving coins to pay for them in a hollow in the centre of the stone. this hollow was filled with vinegar, purifying the coins and preventing infection.
